Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic concern. They may cause health complications if left untreated.

Schedule a consultation appointment: call (585) 723-7060 today.

The veins in your legs have one-way valves to keep blood flowing from your legs up toward your heart. When these valves don’t work properly, the blood collects in your legs and pressure builds. The veins become weaker, larger and twisted. We call these varicose veins.

There are many causes of varicose veins, including:

  • Aging
  • Weight issues
  • Standing for long periods on a regular basis
  • Pregnancy
  • Heredity

While varicose veins usually aren’t serious, they can lead to complications or they may be a reflection of more severe vein-related disease that can result in unsightly and painful leg sores.

Treatment for varicose veins is designed to reduce your symptoms and prevent complications. We can also help improve the appearance of your legs.

When you come in, we check your legs for tender areas, swelling, skin color changes, sores and other signs of skin breakdown. And we may recommend one of these common treatments:

  • Compression therapy – You may wear compression stockings that provide gradient pressure on your leg muscles, which reduces the pooling of blood
  • Sclerotherapy – We inject a chemical (sclerosant) into your varicose vein to damage and scar the inside lining, which causes the vein to close. This procedure works best for small veins or spider veins.
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) – We use radio frequency energy to go inside a vein to close it off. We can also use this procedure to close off a large, superficial varicose vein in your leg if necessary.
  • Microphlebectomy (stab avulsion) – We make several tiny incisions in the skin and actually remove the varicose vein.
  • Surgical ligation and stripping – We make incisions over the varicose veins, then tie off the vein (ligation) and remove it (stripping).

Your doctor will thoroughly explain any treatment options we recommend.
