Hern Begins New Role as CEO of Unity Health System
Former Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Warren Hern is now the president and CEO of Unity Health System. The leadership change took effect on the first of the year. Hern became CFO of Unity in 1985. He joined Park Ridge Health System, the predecessor to Unity Health System, in 1976.
Hern succeeds Tim McCormick, the longest serving health care executive in the Rochester Community, who announced plans to retire at the end of 2009 back in April.
The Unity Health System board of directors approved the appointment of Hern as president and CEO following McCormick’s announcement at Unity’s annual meeting.
“The board conducted a thorough and thoughtful process to select Tim’s successor,” said Robert Asbury, M.D., who chaired the Succession Planning Committee. “Based on Warren’s track record of success, we believe he is highly qualified to lead Unity into the future. He will certainly build upon Tim’s outstanding commitment to customer focus, community responsiveness, and high quality patient care, and will steer us successfully through the multiple complex challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
Hern served as national chairman of the board of directors of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) during 1996-97 year, and prior to that served in various officer positions and on the board of directors. HFMA is the nation's leading membership organization for healthcare financial management executives and leaders, with more than 35,000 members. He is a frequent guest lecturer at the University of Rochester Simon School and Roberts Wesleyan College MBA programs.
He currently serves as treasurer of Cerebral Palsy (CP) of Rochester. He is a member of the JPMorgan Chase Rochester Region Advisory Board and the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) Finance Committee.
Hern holds an MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BS Degree in Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University. He is a fellow in HFMA.
