Unity Launches New Patient Portal

Patients of many Unity Health System practices can now request appointments, ask non-urgent medical questions and access medical documents online by using My Unity, Unity’s new web-based patient portal.

The new site is available for use by more than 165,000 patients in Unity’s primary, dental and select specialty practices.

“My Unity is another way that our patients can help manage their own health care decisions,” said Michael Nazar, M.D., Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs, Unity Medical Group. “We designed the new patient portal to provide patients with access to our practices, along with the convenience and security that they can expect from Unity.”

This first version of My Unity gives patients four new online capabilities:

  • Appointments—Patients can request non-urgent appointments, and all requests sent before 2 p.m. are answered the same day. Requests sent after 2 p.m. on weekdays or any time on weekends are answered the next business day.
  • Medical questions—To ask non-urgent medical questions, patients simply log in to My Unity and use it in the same way they would an email program. When an answer is delivered, patients get a conventional email directing them to log in again to get the response from their provider. In many cases, Unity nurses are able to answer patient questions over My Unity, giving patients faster answers to questions about a wide range of health and medical issues.
  • Practice documents—Through My Unity, patients can request office visit summaries, immunization records, office forms such as physical exam requests, and laboratory test-result records. Responses normally take two days to deliver.
  • Research center—The online research center includes a symptom checker and health-decision tools, along with helpful information on medical conditions, medications, medical tests and more.

“The My Unity patient portal proves that we can communicate effectively with patients using a secure web connection,” said Robert Bingham, M.D., endocrinologist at Unity Hospital. “The portal allows me to communicate and work with patients who travel frequently, or don’t have time until the evening when their kids are in bed. I encourage all of my patients to enroll in My Unity so they can access their providers and the practice when it’s convenient for them.”

In the near future, patients can send prescription refill requests online and will have access to their medical records. My Unity’s online appointment calendar, available in early 2013, will enable patients to make appointments without talking with a receptionist, they can just go to My Unity and view and book available appointment times.

Patients can enroll in My Unity by first getting a temporary password from a front desk representative at a participating Unity Health System practice. The temporary password ensures privacy and security. With the password, patients can sign up for My Unity by going to myunity.unityhealth.org and clicking Need to enroll? Then click Enroll Now
