Lights of Love Honors Loved Ones through Holidays

Thousands of twinkling lights were lit Thursday evening at Unity Health System’s three campuses, for Lights of Love.

Lights of Love allows people to honor or memorialize a loved one with the purchase of a light. The names of all those honored are also placed into a special book. The popular program and ceremony have been held every year since 1988.

Two Park Ridge Auxiliary members were given the honor of flipping the switch to turn on about 8,500 lights. Jean Valenti, gift shop chairman, and Juli Viviani, assistant gift shop chairman, have dedicated themselves to the Auxiliary since 1986. Combined, they’ve volunteered about 22,000 hours. They are both stepping down from their positions in January.

“The ceremony was beautiful, and a wonderful way for us to honor friends and family,” said Sharlene Penna, president of the Park Ridge Auxiliary. “We’re very grateful for the support of the community, who help make this event so memorable.”

Before the lighting guests were treated to a performance by the St. Lawrence Church Choir. After the lights were lit the crowd sang “Silent Night.” The lights will now remain lit through the holiday season.

This year’s Lights of Love campaign has raised approximately $3,000 to date. The campaign runs all through the year. Forms to order lights are now available online at www.unityhealth.org/about/lightsoflove.pdf

The Park Ridge Auxiliary has donated over $4 million to Unity Health System for patient care thanks to Auxiliary members who give countless hours of volunteer time for services, events and activities throughout the year. For more information on the Park Ridge Auxiliary call 723-7102.
