Unity Acute Rehabilitation &
Brain Injury Program
Unity’s rehabilitation program is the largest of its kind in the Finger Lakes region, offering a complete range of rehabilitative services to individuals with orthopaedic and neurological conditions.
Our program is the only one in the area accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for acute rehabilitation and brain injury rehabilitation. This means that you’re assured the highest possible standards of care.
We serve patients with:
The most comprehensive, progressive treatment available.
Our team of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physicians, neuropsychologists, physician assistants (PAs), nurses, and therapists is committed to providing the most advanced care.
Our staff is led by some of the area’s finest physicians and neuropsychologists who maintain special certification and training in brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and musculoskeletal conditions. Many members of our nursing and therapy staff have earned advanced certification in the rehabilitation and neuroscience field—a unique attribute of our program.
Our team of highly trained specialists also includes, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, activities coordinators, case managers, dieticians, and registered nurses. Educational tutors, counselors, and chaplains are available on an as-needed basis.
Family members are an integral part of our team.
You and your family are welcome to participate in therapies and program activities, and to attend evaluations and conferences throughout the course of treatment. At times, accommodations are made for family members to stay overnight with their loved one. Family involvement is vital to the recovery process and serves as a steppingstone to reconnect with friends, neighbors, co-workers, and classmates as the person progresses or regains skills.
Your Specialized Team
We offer a wide scope of treatment throughout the course of rehabilitation. Many of our clinicians hold advanced certification and training in their fields of expertise. The Unity Acute Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Program and Ridgeway Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation-Neuro, offers what is referred to as an "interdisciplinary process." An interdisciplinary Model of Rehabilitiation is defined as a treatment process in which members of the treatment team jointly assess the patient, and together with that patient and his/her family or representative, identify a common set of goals for the therapy program. Together this team evaluates, plans, and implements treatment procedures to achieve these goals and develop plans promoting the highest level of functional independence at discharge. The team will work with the patient and family or representative to ensure training and education are complete.

The admissions process
If you’re ready to move forward with the admissions process for one of our rehabilitation programs, we will guide you through the required forms for medical insurance, Social Security, and disability claims. We know that paperwork can be overwhelming at a time like this, so our staff is available to answer any questions and keep the process rolling.
When it is time to go home, you and your family can be confident that you will have our continued support in the days and months ahead.
A case manager is assigned to each patient to help coordinate rehabilitative needs, including outpatient care as appropriate; to make connections to resources in the community; and to respond to needs for services such as home health care, equipment, transportation, or vocational training.
Our physicians, neuropsychologists, and therapists will continue to help the patient interface with school or work, as long as needed, sometimes for years following the injury.
Comprehensive outpatient care is available through Unity Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, located at several convenient sites throughout the Rochester area. To ensure continuity of care, the same physician remains with each patient throughout the course of rehabilitation.
