Longtime Unity Leader Retires, Appointment Announced

After three decades of leadership to Unity Health System and the former St. Mary’s Hospital, President of the Health Care Services Division Stewart Putnam announced his retirement today. Putnam will retire on March 7.

Beginning January 15 until his retirement date, Putnam will serve as special advisor to Warren Hern, President and CEO, to lend his support in partnership-related activities.

During his time at Unity, Putnam has served for the past two years as President, Health Care Services Division, and for 15 years as Executive Vice President. He has helped transform Unity into a top-quality hospital, attract and retain the best physicians, and guide modernization and expansion efforts to create what is virtually a brand new hospital.

Putnam played a crucial role in the formation of Unity Health System as President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Mary’s Hospital. He was instrumental in creating the successful affiliation that restructured Park Ridge Health System and St. Mary’s Hospital to become Unity, and transformed St. Mary’s from an acute care facility to the first-of-its-kind, award-winning community health campus that it is today.

Putnam joined St. Mary’s Hospital in 1984 and served in a variety of administrative roles prior to his appointment as CEO. His accomplishments include the development of a range of community services in inner city Rochester, for which St. Mary’s received the prestigious Foster G. McGaw prize in 1996.

He is active on several community boards, and, notably, is chair-elect of the national board of the Alzheimer’s Association. He will become chair of the national board of the Alzheimer’s Association in October 2014 for a two-year term.

“I am thankful to Stewart for his significant role in shaping what Unity has become today, and will be in the future,” said Hern.

Doug Stewart, Senior Vice President of the Health Care Services Division at Unity, has been appointed to Putnam’s position effective January 15.

Doug Stewart joined Unity in 2005 as Vice President, Behavioral Health and has overseen operations of inpatient, ambulatory and support services at Unity Hospital since 2012.
