Golisano Center at Unity Hospital opens new treatment units
More patients in the Rochester area will get care in state-of-the-art facilities for endoscopy procedures and dialysis treatments at the newly expanded Golisano Center at Unity Hospital.
Opened for patients just last week, construction of the new Unity Dialysis and Endoscopy centers was supported by major contributions from local donors.
Both of Unity’s Dialysis and Endoscopy services are housed in Unity Hospital’s Golisano Center, which was made possible by a $10 million grant from the B. Thomas Golisano Foundation in 2010.
A gift of $400,000 from the Andrew J. Kirch Charitable Trust is funding the new Dialysis unit, and a donation of $400,000 from Drs. Kamal and Tarun Kothari will support the new Endoscopy unit. Since 1997, the Kirch Charitable Trust has donated more than $1 million to Unity Hospital for its Intensive Care Unit, and the care and treatment of kidney disease.
“Thanks to the generosity of an extraordinary set of donors, our patients and staff now have superb dialysis and endoscopy facilities for their use,” said Stewart Putnam, executive vice president and COO of Unity Hospital. “The improvements are vast—from beautiful new designs for patient waiting rooms, to all aspects of the new treatment areas—so that the care and comfort of our patients remains at a very high level of excellence.”
Both new facilities are on the first floor of the Hospital and have adjacent, dedicated entrances from a covered drive-up area. All parking at Unity Hospital is free.
About the Dialysis Center: The new Dialysis Center is an 18,915 square-foot facility, built to meet the needs of an increasing number of patients requiring treatment. In 2011, Unity patients received about 53,400 dialysis treatments, up from approximately 48,000 in 2010. The new facility includes three levels of service:
• A 24-station outpatient unit with a spacious layout and the newest technology
• An eight-bed inpatient unit with its own elevator for easy and convenient patient transport
• Peritoneal Dialysis Services—a training facility for the home-treatment program used by patients with severe, chronic kidney disease
The patient experience in the Dialysis Center starts with a spacious, modern waiting room that easily accommodates patients, visitors, and families. In the treatment area, new features include a television and radiant heat panel with individual controls at each patient-treatment station. Patients typically get treated three times per week for an average of 3.5 hours per treatment, so safety and comfort are paramount for them during those prolonged stays.
About the Endoscopy Center: Physicians at Unity Hospital perform more endoscopies than any other area hospital—more than 14,000 per year.
More than doubling its former space to 17,000 square feet, the new Endoscopy Center includes a large, comfortable waiting room, 30 preparation/recovery rooms with space for family members and visitors, and five state-of-the-art procedure rooms.
Unity Hospital Modernization and Expansion Project: The recently opened Unity Dialysis and Endoscopy centers complete Phase II of the four-year, $144 million Unity Hospital Modernization and Expansion Project.
Construction for the project began with Phase I in 2010—which included the opening of Wegman Family Cottages at Park Ridge Living Center and the McCormick Transitional Care Center. Construction is underway on the third and last phase of the project. The new Golisano Restorative Neurology and Rehabilitation Center, and a new Joint Replacement Center, are scheduled to open in 2014.
When the project is complete, patients will see improvements in a range of services—from cardiology and pharmacy, to improved nursing stations and larger parking lots—and all Unity Hospital patient rooms will remain private.
