National Cardiac Psychology Expert to Speak
at Unity Hospital on ICD’s
Rochester, N.Y. (June 21, 2011) - Samuel Sears, Jr., Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert on cardiac psychology, as it relates to implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients, will speak on Thursday, June 23, from 9:00 – 10:30 am., in the Unity Hospital Education Center, 1555 Long Pond Road. Cardiac psychology is a specialization of psychology that focuses on helping cardiac patients cope with life and physical changes associated with heart disease.
Dr. Sears will discuss the significant psychological and behavioral aspects of the ICD patients' quality of life, patient acceptance of such devices, and how to deal with patients who have experienced receiving a shock from their ICD. The talk is free and open to heath care professionals such as nurses, certified nurse assistants, nursing assistants, medics, physician assistants, and technicians, who care for patients with ICDs.
Dr. Sears is program director of the health psychology program, and part of the department of Psychology and Cardiovascular Sciences at East Carolina University. He also provides services to cardiac and ICD patients at the Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinic.
There are over 1 million people living with ICD's, a small battery-powered device placed in the chest or abdomen, which is connected to wires that are placed in your heart (similar to how a pacemaker is implanted). This device uses electrical stimulation, or shocks, to help control life-threatening irregular heartbeats, especially those that could cause sudden cardiac death.
Registration is not required. For more information, contact 585-368-4970.
