Unity Health System Participates in National Cancer Survivors Day
Rochester, N.Y. (June 8, 2011) - Unity’s Oncology/Hematology Department will join communities in the United States and throughout the world to celebrate the 24th annual National Cancer Survivors Day®. There are 12 million cancer survivors in America. About 4,900 of these survivors received care or are current patients of Unity Oncology/Hematology.
Unity Oncology/Hematology will host a free picnic for cancer survivors and their families on Sunday, June 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the courtyard at Unity St. Mary’s Campus, 89 Genesee St. This year’s event will feature food, games, musical entertainment by The SWAN Band, and Patricia Dillard, a cancer survivor, will sing. About 250 cancer survivors and their friends and families are expected to attend Unity’s annual event.
National Cancer Survivors Day®, held in June, was created to celebrate the lives of people throughout the world who are living with a history of cancer, and demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive. It also provides participants a chance to connect with other survivors and share their unique issues of cancer survivorship. A person is a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis through the remainder of his or her life.
