Unity Hospital Receives Award for Stroke Care

Rochester, N.Y. (May 13, 2011) – May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and Unity Hospital is being recognized for its treatment of people having a stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United States, and a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability.

The American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA) has awarded Unity Hospital a Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award for stroke care. The award recognizes Unity’s expanded efforts to provide quality care through administering additional evidence-based therapies. Hospitals who have received the award have reached an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care as outlined by the AHA/ASA.

Unity also made the ASA “Target Stroke Honor Roll.” To achieve this recognition, a hospital must provide at least half of its ischemic stroke patients--the most common type of stroke--the clot-busting drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) within one hour of arriving to the hospital, for a minimum of three months. Target: Stroke is a national quality improvement campaign created by the AHA/ASA to help hospitals eliminate delays and reduce long-term disability in stroke patients.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die. According to the AHA/ASA, on average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Unity Hospital is a designated Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health, and has leading programs to treat and rehabilitate stroke patients. This includes Unity’s Acute Rehabilitation and Brain Injury program, the largest of its kind in the Finger Lakes region. The program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for acute stroke, pediatric, and brain injury rehabilitation.
