Unity Health System Receives $500,000 Gift for Renovation and Expansion of Unity Hospital

Rochester, N.Y. (May 10, 2011) – Unity Health System has received a major gift for the expansion and modernization of Unity Hospital. Thomas P. Riley and Barbara M. Kelley have donated $500,000 toward the project that will add much-needed beds and enhance patient care by renovating existing patient rooms and other areas of the Hospital.

Riley’s service to Unity began in 1966. He was a board member of the Park Avenue Hospital and working with the Northwest Hospital Committee, their efforts led to the rebuilding of the hospital in the Town of Greece, which was named Park Ridge Hospital (renamed Unity Hospital in 2006). Riley served as vice chair and later chair of Park Ridge Hospital’s Board of Directors from 1976 - 1981. He has served as a Unity Health System board member from April 2006 to present, a Unity Health Foundation (formerly Park Ridge Foundation) board member and Philanthropy Committee member since 1997, and served on the Park Ridge Chemical Dependency/Behavioral Health and Marketing Committee.

Kelley also has a longstanding commitment to Unity having served as a Unity Health System board member and Marketing committee member from 2000 to 2008.

“We are extremely grateful for Tom Riley and Barbara Kelley’s ongoing dedication to Unity and their generous gift,” said Warren Hern, president and CEO of Unity Health System. “The strength of our organization relies on the people like them who support our mission and help us deliver health care how it should be.”

“This hospital has been part of my life for 45 years” said Riley. “Barbara and I are so proud of the role it plays in the quality of life we enjoy in our region. It proves that when an organization has a plan, and stays focused on its mission, great results can be achieved.”

In recognition of their generous gift, the new board room in the renovated Hospital will be named in Riley’s honor.

The cost of the modernization and expansion of Unity Hospital is $159 million. The multi-year project is expected to be completed in 2014.
