Unity Hospital, Ithaca College Offer New York’s First Credentialed Residency Program in Neurologic Physical Therapy

Rochester, N.Y. (April 22, 2011) - Unity Hospital and Ithaca College now offer New York State’s first post-professional residency program in neurologic physical therapy credentialed by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). There are only 12 programs in the nation that have achieved this status.

Being credentialed by the APTA ensures that the residency program is performing at the highest level of excellence.

The 50 week program – a collaboration between Unity’s Department of Rehabilitation and Neurology and Ithaca College’s Department of Physical Therapy, Rochester Center – targets physical therapists interested in receiving advanced training in neurologic physical therapy. A residency program consists of clinical and classroom education that is designed to significantly advance the physical therapist's preparation for patient care.

A neurologic physical therapist is a professional who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with movement problems due to disease or injury of the nervous system. These specialists work with a broad range of conditions in both adults and children that include: stroke, traumatic brain injury, balance and vestibular dysfunction, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other neurologic medical diagnoses.

Working under the guidance of expert clinicians, the resident provides physical therapy services within two of Unity’s clinical practice settings, including inpatient care delivered at Unity Hospital’s Acute Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Unit on the St. Mary's campus, and outpatient services delivered at Unity Hospital’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at the Unity at Ridgeway facility in the Town of Greece. Residents also gain teaching experience by serving as lab assistants in Ithaca College's entry-level clinical neurology curriculum.

“The Unity and Ithaca College partnership allows the resident to engage in clinical practice, teaching, and service,” said Cindy Zablotny, co-director of the Residency in Neurologic Physical Therapy. This helps strengthen how they use their knowledge and expertise, together with the latest research, to make the best decision about the care of patients.”
