Unity Health System Partners with Fleet Feet Sports to Promote Health and Wellness in Rochester - New Health Series Underway; Feb. 22 Talk to Focus on Injuries and Chronic Problems for Runners

Rochester, N.Y. (February 22, 2011) - Unity Health System is partnering with Fleet Feet Sports to promote better health and wellness in the Rochester community. This will include the Fleet Feet Health Clinic Series, a monthly event featuring a Unity expert discussing topics ranging from nutrition to mind and body wellness.

The next seminar will be “How Runners Can Help Reduce the Incidence of Injury and Relieve Chronic Problems,” with Mike Mimken, clinical supervisor for Unity Physical Therapy, on February 22, from 7:15 – 8:15 p.m. The discussion will look at common muscle imbalances and flexibility problems that can lead a runner to injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, and hip and back pain. Participants will learn about ways to strengthen key muscles and modify common stretches to improve their performance. Mimken, an avid runner and cyclist, has been a practicing physical therapist for almost 30 years.

It is free, open to the public, and held at Fleet Feet Sports, 2210 Monroe Avenue, in the Town of Pittsford. For more information, contact Fleet Feet at 585-697-3338.

Another benefit of the partnership is Fleet Feet expanding the reach of its No Boundaries: Learn to Run program, by adding the Unity at Ridgeway medical facility in the Town of Greece as a second location. No Boundaries is a beginner 5K or 10K running program to help individuals safely and effectively get into running, while also learning valuable information on healthy living.

The two companies also partner on the Unity Heath System Rochester Flower City Challenge. Now in its second year, the race continues to grow, with more than 1,200 people already registered for the weekend event, April 30 and May 1. Fleet Feet manages the race logistics.

“There is a synergy between the two companies,” said Ellen Brenner, co-owner, Fleet Feet Sports. “We both strongly believe in getting people to be healthy and fit.” She added, “Unity is a bright spot in Rochester. They have a legacy of helping people in the community, and have so many wonderful programs to offer.”
