Unity Health System Participates in
National Memorial Day Service for the Homeless
Local Service Organizations to be Involved; Warm Clothing to be Given Away
Rochester, N.Y. (December 22, 2010) - Did you know the average age of death of homeless persons is about 50 years-- the age at which Americans commonly died in 1900-- and that homeless persons are three times more likely to die than the general population?
With those statistics in mind, Unity Health System will be hosting the 20th annual National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day on December 22, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Unity St. Mary’s Campus. This year, Unity will collaborate with other Rochester area organizations that provide services to the homeless: the Homeless Services Network (HSN), the YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County, and its own McCree McCuller Wellness Center.
There will be speakers from two of the shelters Unity partners with, Bethany House and the Catholic Family Center. In addition, the names of Rochester area homeless who have died in 2010 will be read, and individual candles will be lit in their memory. HSN will provide hats, gloves and scarves to give away during the memorial service.
Since 1990, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored events to bring attention to homelessness, and remember those who have died while homeless.
Unity’s Health Reach Health Care for the Homeless program provides comprehensive health care services for the homeless or those at-risk for homelessness. Services provided at shelters and other locations in Rochester for men, women, and children include health assessments, treatment, referral, and coordination with primary care providers, TB screenings, substance abuse evaluations, mental health evaluations, dental evaluation, screenings and education about HIV/AIDS.
Earlier this year, Unity Health celebrated the grand opening of a new health clinic for the homeless at 819 West Main St. (across the street from Unity St. Mary's Campus). It was funded by more than $300,000 in federal stimulus money.
