Unity Health System Administrators
Become “Apprentices” for a Day
Unity Health System’s administrators will report to work on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, but they won’t be doing their jobs. Instead, these top leaders will work in various staff roles, such as maintenance technician, food service assistant, and hospital patient transporter.
“Administrator Apprentice” is a one-day opportunity for Unity leaders to visit work sites and experience front-line job roles. While “on the job” they meet staff members, and understand through hands-on experience the rewards and challenges of other jobs within the Health System.
“Administrator Apprentice accomplishes many things we feel are important, including an opportunity to build camaraderie between administrators and staff at all levels,” said Maryalice Keller, vice president of Corporate Communications & Human Resources. “We feel it’s important to get our administrators out of their offices and usual venues so that they can gain appreciation for the many people at Unity who make us a successful organization.” Unlike a shadowing program, “Administrator Apprentice” will have hands-on involvement working an entire day’s shift.
A team of Unity staff members developed the plan, which included identifying a variety of jobs at Unity and assigning an administrator to each role. Assignments were revealed to administrators last month as part of the monthly Management Staff meeting.
