Unity to Expand Dialysis Services in Monroe County

Unity Health System is pleased to celebrate the construction of Unity at Spencerport today with a groundbreaking ceremony. The 21,000 sq. foot building will house a new dialysis center with 16 stations. Unity Family Medicine at Spencerport and an ACM Medical Laboratory Patient Service Center, both currently located at 377 S. Union St., will relocate to the new facility.

Unity received Certificate of Need (CON) approval from New York State’s Department of Health to add dialysis stations to the area, in order to meet the growing demand for dialysis services in Monroe County and nearby communities.

“This is an exciting day for Unity, as we continue to build for the future,” said Stewart Putnam, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Unity Health System. “This new facility will offer our patients the latest technologies in dialysis care, and provide space to Unity Family Medicine at Spencerport to continue its growth.”

Unity currently provides dialysis services at the Unity Park Ridge and Unity St. Mary’s campuses. Both centers have seen an increase in demand for treatment, and are at or near capacity, even after adding a fourth shift of treatments to help alleviate the need. Patients who come in for the fourth shift are receiving treatments at or past midnight. The addition of the new Center will help reduce the need for scheduling a fourth shift.

Unity Dialysis Center at Spencerport will have sixteen regular dialysis stations, and one isolation station, that feature the newest technology, such as a central delivery station, and state-of-the-art water treatment equipment. Designed with patient comfort in mind, each dialysis station will have its own television set, and free wi-fi will be available for patients.

To staff the new Dialysis Center, Unity expects to add an additional seven jobs, including nurses, technologists, and clinical assistants. Due to the creation of new jobs at the facility, and because other criteria were met, the $4.7 million project was eligible for property tax abatement from the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency (COMIDA).

Unity at Spencerport is expected to be complete and ready for occupancy in January 2010.
