Butterfly Release Celebrates Planting of New Garden

Hilton Park, an affordable senior apartment community owned by Unity Health System, is the newest location to be added to Seneca Park Zoo’s “Butterfly Beltway.”

A garden with several varieties of plants that attract local butterfly species was planted at the apartment complex on Monday, July 6. The colorful garden includes day lilies, asters, goldenrod, and a variety of milkweed.

“These plants are some of the favorites of butterflies native to the Rochester area. We’ll see some Monarch butterflies visit the garden,” said Tina Crandall, conservation education coordinator at the Seneca Park Zoo.

Following the planting of the garden, experts from the Seneca Park Zoo answered questions about butterflies, and released several butterflies, with the assistance of the tenants.

“This garden is something that both butterflies and tenants here will enjoy for years to come,” said DeAnn Osborne, property manager, Hilton Park.

Hilton Park is the second Unity Health System site included in the “Butterfly Beltway.” The Villages at Unity has its own garden, and will receive another visit from Zoo staff in August.

The Seneca Park Zoo’s “Butterfly Beltway” program was started in 2002, and covers a nine-county region.
