Free Heart Health Screenings Offered During Healthy Heart Fair

February is American Heart Month- an annual observance created to remind people of all ages about heart disease, and the importance of heart health.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. For Baby Boomers, the death rate is steadily increasing. American Heart Association (AHA) found that in 2008, for the 40-59 age groups, about 39.1 percent of men, and 39.5 percent of women had cardiovascular disease-- an increase of approximately three percent over 2007. AHA predicts that as the Baby Boom Generation ages, the number of deaths from heart disease will increase 130 percent- between the years 2000 and 2050.

Regular check-ups that include blood pressure and cholesterol screenings can prevent a heart incident.

Unity Hospital, ACM Laboratory-- a subsidiary of Unity Health System, The Mall at Greece Ridge, and Unity Health Total Sports Experience are partnering for a free preventive health event for the community. On Wednesday, February 18, 2009, the organizations will host a Healthy Heart Fair for Baby Boomers at the Food Court of The Mall at Greece Ridge, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Unity Health System clinicians will provide information, and free screenings associated with heart health, including:
• Cholesterol screenings provided by ACM Medical Laboratory
• Blood pressure checks
• Body Mass Index screenings provided by Unity Health System Total Sports Experience
• Healthy diet tips
• Activities for children provided by Park Ridge Child Care Center and Unity Health System Total Sports Experience

In addition, Unity Health System will be providing free counseling services for those who are need of information about health care coverage and financial assistance for healthcare. Facilitated enrollers from Unity will be available to discuss health care coverage options.

The Villages, a senior living community operated by Unity Health System, and Unity’s Home and Community Based Services, will be raffling off a $50 Visa gift card. Look for the heart balloons in the area between the Food Court and JC Penney on Wednesday, February 18th. The fair is free and open to people of all ages!
