Right After Knee Replacement Surgery
After Knee Surgery - Day One
By 7 a.m. on Day One after surgery, you can expect to be bathed, dressed, helped out of bed, and seated in a recliner in your room. Your surgeon and physician's assistant will visit you in the morning. Group therapy begins at 9 a.m. and the afternoon session begins at 1 p.m. The physical therapist will get you walking with a walker. Your coach is encouraged to be present as much as possible. Visitors are welcome, preferably late afternoons or evenings until 8 p.m.
After Knee Surgery - Day Two
On Day Two after surgery, we will help you get dressed and out of bed. It will be much easier today. Shorts and tops are usually best; long pants are restrictive. Group therapy is at 9 a.m. It is helpful if your coach attends these sessions. You will practice getting in and out of bed and you may even begin walking stairs this afternoon. Your appetite should start to improve. Evenings are free for friends to visit.
You may be discharged home today. More and more patients are meeting their discharge goals on day two. Your surgeon and the hospital staff will let you know if this applies to you.
Day Three - Discharge Day
Day Three is similar to day two in the morning. Please be sure your coach attends your group therapy class today. If your physical therapist clears you for discharge, you will go home after the morning group therapy session. Occasionally, people have to stay for the afternoon therapy class and go home after that.
