As director of Unity Diabetes and Endocrinology Services and Unity Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Jean supervises our staff of diabetes nurses, nutritionists, and office assistants. She has more than 25 years of experience in diabetes and nutrition counseling. She is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, and also serves as a diabetes consultant to a variety of organizations.
Karen Gesell, R.D., C.D.E.
As program coordinator for the AADE-recognized Unity Diabetes Education Program, Karen brings more than 12 years of experience as a registered dietitian, and is a certified diabetes educator. She holds a B.S. in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Canisius College, a B.S. in Dietetics from Buffalo State College, and an M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Buffalo.
Karen Baker, M.S., R.D., C.D.E, C.P.T.
Karen is our inpatient diabetes educator. She has over 17 years of experience in the field of nutrition, and is a certified diabetes educator and certified pump trainer. She has held adjunct faculty positions at both the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Karen received her Bachelor's degree from Alfred University and her Master's in nutrition management from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Colleen Gladstone, R.N., C.D.E.
As a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, Colleen provides individual patient counseling in diabetes management. She is also involved in curriculum development for educating clinical staff throughout the Unity Health System in concepts of diabetes management. Colleen is a graduate of SUNY Buffalo.
Jane Giambrone, R.N., C.D.E.
Jane has been a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator for over 15 years. She has worked as a diabetes nurse in a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient and home care. As a certified professional life coach, she helps patients get from where they are now to where they want to be. Jane is a graduate of Monroe Community College and SUNY Cortland.
Marilyn Konezny, R.D., C.D.N., C.D.E., C.P.T.
Marilyn is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and insulin pump and sensor trainer with more than 30 years of experience in diabetes and nutrition counseling. A graduate of Marywood University, Marilyn is an active member of the Rochester Area Diabetes Educators (RADE) chapter of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
Elva Parker, M.S., R.D., C.D.E.
Elva is a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of kidney disease. She provides nutrition counseling for diabetes, weight management and cardiopulmonary patients. Elva received a Bachelor's degree in nutrition from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master's degree in health education from the University of Rochester.
Sharon Spear, R.D., C.D.E.
Sharon has been a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator for over 20 years. She provides nutrition counseling for weight management, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes education. She is a co-facilitator for the "Seeds of Change" vegan class at the Unity Diabetes Center. Sharon is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Joy Valvano, M.S., R.D., C.D.E., C.P.T.
Joy is a certified diabetes educator and certified pump trainer, providing both individual and group diabetes education. She also offers nutrition counseling for children, people with eating disorders, and cardiopulmonary patients. Joy was instrumental in creating and co-facilitating the "Seeds of Change" vegan class offered at Unity Diabetes Center. She is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed her registered dietician internship at Iowa State University.
