star:
What are the blood glucose goals supposed to be after having a baby? I need this information for fasting after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had the paper, but lost it.
KarenG@Unity:
Welcome to the Unity Diabetes Online Community! I’m Karen Gesell, a certified diabetes educator at Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services, and I’ll be hosting today’s chat with our special guest Kelly Mueller from the American Diabetes Association in recognition of Diabetes Month. I’m glad you could join us today. We’re excited to answer all of your questions.
KarenG@Unity:
Before we get started let me just tell you how I’ll address your questions and comments today. I answer questions one at a time, in the order that they are posted to the site, and there might be a slight delay as I respond to each question. It may take a few minutes for me to type answers to your questions, so please stay logged-in to the chat to see my response, even if it takes a few minutes. And you might need to refresh every few minutes to keep up with the latest posts in the chat if you switch to another application on your computer. Let’s get started.
KellyM@ADA:
Good evening!
KarenG@Unity:
Hi Kelly, I know that November is National Diabetes Month. Does the ADA have any event planned?
KellyM@ADA:

We are excited to welcome our community to our Forum next Thursday, Nov. 14 entitled Taking Care of Diabetes from Head to Toe.
KellyM@ADA:
Here are the details:
KellyM@ADA:

SyddyBee:
Is there an admission fee?
KellyM@ADA:

Hi Folks - For my type 2 diabetes, my doctor's nurse practitioner has prescribed Janumet XR 100/1000 mg, one per day, plus pioglitazone (generic Actos) 45 mg, one per day. I have been taking the actos in the morning, and the januumet in the evening. QUESTION: Is that appropriate, or should I be taking both of them at the same time?
KellyM@ADA:
No, this event is free and open to the public. We have a great line-up of experts from Unity Health System and our community.
KellyM@ADA:
Panelists include: Howard Beckman, M.D., Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency; Gabriela Cipriano, PharmD, Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher College, Anthony Jordan Health Center; Fran Pullano, Company Flexible Benefits Solutions; Toufic Rizk, M.D., Unity Wound Care Center and Unity Vascular Surgery; Tziporah Rosenberg, PhD, LMFT, University of Rochester Medical Center; Suzan Saber, M.D., Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services; Theresa Wing, R.D., YMCA of Greater Rochester.
SyddyBee:
Thanks!
KarenG@Unity:
Hi Jack, I would talk to your doctor about how and when to take your medications.
jack34:
Ok. Thank you.
KarenG@Unity:
Kelly, I see there is a wellness fair. What does that involve?
foos:
I won't be able to attend the Nov.14 event. Will there be another one any time soon?
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, there will be a number of community organizations and companies that will be showcasing their services and products from 5:30 to 6:30 next Thursday. There should be a lot of samples and good information for people who want more information about managing their diabetes.
KellyM@ADA:
Hi foos, this is our main public community event but we always have a lot of great resources available online at www.diabetes.org
foos:
OK, thank you, Kelly.
KellyM@ADA:
If you happen to live near Buffalo, we are holding the same event tomorrow night. Short notice, I know : )
KellyM@ADA:
You can also connect with the ADA locally and find out about community classes through our resource guide and Unity offers a lot of great events (check out the "mark your calendar" tab to the left of the screen).
KarenG@Unity:
Kelly, do we need to make reservations to attend the event?
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, please. You can reserve your seat by calling 585-458-3040 x3472 or visit www.ROCdiabetes.eventbrite.com
foos:
Thank you for the information about tomorrow night but already have another commitment. I will check the calendar for other events and classes. Thanks.
KarenG@Unity:
Thank you
KellyM@ADA:
We will also be on air with WXXI next Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. answering people's questions about diabetes with experts from the community.
KarenG@Unity:
That sounds great, who are some of the experts?
KellyM@ADA:
We are still lining up our panel for that and will be releasing the names soon.
KarenG@Unity:
Will the information be available on your web site?
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, we will be sharing more information via social media as well.
KellyM@ADA:
Dr. Saber, from Unity Health System will be joining us next Thursday night.
KellyM@ADA:
And Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services is going to have some health food samples during the wellness fair.
KarenG@Unity:
I would also like to add that for anyone that follows us on Twitter Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services will be tweeting from the event on Thursday. November 4.
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, #ROCdiabetes will be the hashtag.
KellyM@ADA:
It is a busy month for getting the word out about all of the great programs in our city.
KellyM@ADA:
Churches will be hosting Diabetes Days this month to share prevention and management messages with their congregations as well.
KarenG@Unity:
It looks like you have a really great line up of panelists that will cover a wide range of topics.
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, we have Fran Pullano who is an insurance expert, Gabriela Cipriano who is a professor of Pharmacy to talk about medications.
foos:
I was just told yesterday by my doctor that I am at the lowest number for the long term blood sugar test that then qualifies me as diabetic. I am on diet and exercise for control at this point – no finger pricking or insulin. What resources do you suggest for me at this point?
SyddyBee:
Karen – what's your Twitter handle for if I can live tweet with you on the day of the event?
KellyM@ADA:
Dr. Rizk from the Unity Wound Care Center to share information about taking care of your feet
KarenG@Unity:
It looks like you also have someone from the YMCA. Will they be discussing exercise and diabetes?
KellyM@ADA:
Yes, the YMCA has a number of programs including the Diabetes Prevention Program and their great Silver Sneakers programs to help people prevent diabetes and to learn more about management and exercise.
KarenG@Unity:
Hi Syddybee, I will have to get back to you with our twitter handle.
KellyM@ADA:
SyddyBee, we will be using the hashtag #ROCDiabetes at the event next week. Please join us online!
SyddyBee:
Thanks!
KarenG@Unity:
Thanks Kelly
KellyM@ADA:
We can even try to get in some twitter questions that night!
KarenG@Unity:
Wow that would be great!!!
SyddyBee:
I use Twitter a lot, so this will be a great way to get involved – I looked it up and I follow Unity Diabetes, the handle is @UnityDiabetes4U
KellyM@ADA:
