Hi Anonymous,
Your post "pre diabetic" refers to the condition of pre-diabetes which is when blood sugars are elevated but not yet in the diabetes range. This include a fasting blood sugar test (done at the lab) of 100-125 mg/dL or a hemoglobin A1c test (three month average of blood sugars) falling in the 5.7% - 6.4% range. Pre-diabetes is often treated with dietary and lifestyle change as the first step to see if blood sugars can be brought back down into the non-diabetes range (fasting blood sugar of 80-99 mg/dL or A1c of less than or equal to 5.6%). The Diabetes Prevention Program Trial research study showed that a 7% weight loss (10-20 pounds for most people) and increase of moderate physical activity (such as walking) to 150 minutes/week (ie: 30 minutes 5 times/week) brought blood sugar levels back down into the non-diabetes range. Here at Unity we offer a Diabetes Prevention Program. Our next session starts in January 2014. If you are interested contact Sean Stark at 368-4560 to see if you qualify and to be put on the waiting list. The Y and URMC Center for Community Health also offer Diabetes Prevention Programs in the Rochester area. If you have further questions about pre-diabetes please post further to this forum.
