Hi Anonymous
Yes weight loss if you are overweight can be very helpful to reduce insulin resistance and lower elevated blood sugars. Weight loss, even a 5-7% wt loss (10-20 pounds for most people) will also help lower cholesterol, blood pressure and promote better overall health. It is helpful to lose weight by following a calorie and carbohydrate managed low-fat low-sodium meal plan along with increased physical activity (ie: walking) several times per week. Many people find it helpful to meet with a diabetes educator to help create an individualized meal and exercise plan that's right for them. To schedule an appointment with a diabetes educator at Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services call 368-4560 (Rochester NY area).
